Unite will call off threat of strikes after new pay offer
British airport operator BAA is set to end strike negotiations
with Unite after the firm offered staff an improved pay offer.
Key staff working at six UK airports had voted in favour of
industrial action over a salary dispute but a new "much improved"
proposal is set to be recommended to employees by the Unite
union.
Brian Boyd, Unite's national officer, confirmed that no strikes
would be held over the coming weeks as workers vote on the new
deal.
No information has been released about the exact details of the
agreement, although the salary increase is expected to be
significantly higher than the previous offer which stipulated a 1.5
per cent rise.
Terry Morgan of BAA expressed his delight that an agreement
could be reached and holidaymakers' travel plans would not be
disrupted.
He said: "We believe that the unions are going to recommend
acceptance of our offer to their membership, and if that's the
case, then we are very, very confident that any disruption to our
airport operations has now been avoided."
