Tip of the week

Time is a highly effective point of leverage in negotiations. Ensure you are in control of it to improve your position and increase power. Remember that most deadlines are artificial. Decide how you may wish to use milestones rather than be the victim of seemingly imposed deadlines.

Strike negotiations possible as unions threaten action

Public sector staff could strike in reaction to spending cuts

10 August 2010

Strike negotiations could be required to negate large-scale industrial action by public sector staff.

Experts have warned that unions are planning to form a partnership and launch a one-day strike in protest over proposed cuts to public spending.

A host of workers including health officials, teachers and council staff could strike on October 20th when chancellor George Osborne is expected to announce the severity of the cuts.
Professor Roger Seifert, an industrial relations expert at Wolverhampton University, claimed union bosses are already attempting to form a united front.

He told the Daily Mail: "What we will see effectively is a one-day general strike in protest against cuts and job losses.

"If it's successful and there is momentum they will hold further strikes of that type and that may well lead by next summer or autumn to a strike wave."

The Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) and the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) have already declared that they would be in favour of united strike action.
