Tip of the week

Time is a highly effective point of leverage in negotiations. Ensure you are in control of it to improve your position and increase power. Remember that most deadlines are artificial. Decide how you may wish to use milestones rather than be the victim of seemingly imposed deadlines.

Tube walkouts to go ahead after strike negotiations collapse

Union members will hold 24 hour strike next week

03 September 2010

The proposed walkouts by London Underground (LU) staff will go ahead after union officials confirmed strike negotiations broke down.

The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) has announced that the first 24 hour strike will take place on Monday evening (6th September).

Members of the RMT and Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) will also walk out on three further dates after a dispute over job cuts could not be resolved.

The unions claim that the loss of 800 staff from ticket offices would put passenger's safety at risk.

Bob Crow, RMT general secretary, claimed the cuts would turn the tube into a "death trap".

He said: "LU management knew very well that meaningful talks could not proceed while the threat of cuts to safety and safe staffing levels hung over our members' heads - their failure to remove that threat sabotaged any prospect of making progress."

Around 10,000 union members will also take part in walkouts on 3rd October, 2nd November and 28th November if an agreement can not be reached.
